Social Action Committee

Purpose

SJC's Social Action Committee focuses on the humanistic principle that as individuals and as a community we have the responsibility for solving human problems. The committee puts into action the Secular Jewish Circle's commitment to the enduring Jewish tradition of support for social action and social justice. While we each take responsibility for our own behavior, we must take collective responsibility for the state of our community and our world.

Current Activities

  1. Separation of Church and State (Latest News)
Early in 2006 the Social Action Committee began focusing on the issue of Separation of Church and State, a policy important to all of us. Some specific activities include:
    • Creating a packet of information on the Separation of Church and State in our public schools
    • Providing information to members on the position of congressional candidates on separation of Church and State
    • Helping to create and continue to work with local chapters of the Americans United (AU) for Separation of Church and State
    • Announcing Barry Lynn, Executive Director of AU upcoming visit (Seattle, June 20, 2007)
    • Local grass roots activities around cities and school boards in the Puget Sound region

  2. Aiding the Homeless (Latest News)
In early 2007 members of the Secular Jewish Circle became actively involved in the creation of the Puget Sound Jewish Coalition on Homelessness. To further our commitment in that coalition the social action committee began addressing the issue of homelessness. We have learned about the extent of homelessness in our region and are currently learning more the commitment many of our members are already making in this area. We are also learning about the current services and programs
that are available to assist the homeless community and we will then see what we as a committee and a community can do to further the Coalition goals. The specific activity currently underway is a proposal to assist Tent City.

The current Tent City is now located at a south end location, but needs to move every 3 months. Since the residents have no means of cooking meals individually or of storing food, they are in need of an evening meal every evening. A very useful thing for us to do would be to commit to providing a simple evening meal once every 3 months. It would probably take 10-15 people to prepare and serve a meal. We could only accomplish this bit of charity if we have enough people committed to help.
